Sterling SilverNjord
Pendant
This pendant depicts
Njord, the Norse god of the ocean. Njord is depicted on a Viking dragon ship holding a great fish, representing the abundance of the sea which is his domain. The runes on Njord's ship are from the Elder Futhark and spell Njord's name. Measuring approximately 1" tall and 1 1/8" wide, the Njord pendant is made of .925 sterling silver. The pendant is single-sided with a hidden bale (see last photo). The bale can accommodate a chain up to 4mm in thickness.
Symbolism:
In
Norse mythology, Njord is associated with the sea, seafaring, wind, fishing, commerce, wealth and crop fertility. Father of the deities Freyr and Freya, Njord was originally a god of the Vanir; but was sent, along with his two children, to live with the Aesir after the Vanir/Aesir war. He lives in Naotun (place of ships) by the sea. Njord is famous for his ill-fated marriage to the giantess Skadi, goddess of winter and the hunt. Skadi, who chose her husband from among the Aesir by looking only at their feet, hated Njord's home by the sea, while Njord could not tolerate Sakdi's abode in the snowy mountains. Njord was a beneficial god who the Norse called upon for fair winds, calm seas, profitable trading ventures and fruitful fishing. Particularly wealthy people in Viking culture were known to be 'as wealthy as Njord'. According to the Poetic Edda, Njord is a future survivor of Ragnarök, the final destiny of the gods.
Silver:
One of the 7 magical metals of the Ancients, silver is the
metal of the moon. Like the moon, silver is linked to the element of water and the Divine Feminine. With its reflective surface, silver acts as a mirror; and the metal is is associated with psychic powers and clairvoyance. Silver is a protective metal and is often used to make protective amulets.
