Simpson 303 Series assembled test probe set
The Simpson 303 series probe is very specific requiring a unique lead configuration and Unique Connector
The Simpson 303 is my favorite of about a dozen VTVM's I own as it is precise, well engineered and looks like a piece of test gear should - for this reason every one of these meters deserves a good set of Test Probes - no need to convert the connections to another modern connector (BNC conversions are popular) as long as the supply of these rare connectors lasts, I will continue to produce these probe sets
Buyers: Due to the scarcity of this connector over the years
MANY
of these have been converted to different connectors in some cases different connectors for AC/DC and even the ground wire connection -
ALL
303's originally shipped with the style of connector supplied in this auction as well as a Pin Tip connection for the ground. The microphone connector measures about 7/16" inches vs. 5/8" for Switchcraft 2501 and 3/8" for Switchcraft 5501s which are both common conversions (as well as BNCs) - check your meter before you purchase, as I can build this set any way you need it.
This meter uses 2 seperate Probes plus a Ground Lead:
DC Probe - New Old Stock Vintage Microphone Connector - RG174 Coax Cable to a Black Test Probe with 1 Meg ohm 1/2 Watt Resistor
AC/Ohms Probe - New Old Stock Vintage Microphone Connector - RG174 Coax Cable to a Red Test Probe (Labeled "AC/Ohms")
Ground Wire - Black Pin Tip Plug - Black Test Lead Wire to Alligator
A word about the "Vintage Microphone Connector" - The microphone connectors used on these meter probes is a New Old Stock microphone Connector which has been out of production for roughly 40 years and so far I cannot find an accurate description for this style of connector - on the exterior it is identical to a Calrad MC150 connector but the threads are slightly different and Genuine NOS Calrad Connectors do not mate to the meter - The connector appears to be a generic version of an Amphenol 80-75MC1 but these too are so old I can find no specifications however, I can confirm that these connectors work on the Simpson Meter and match some of the Old Connectors I received with my 303 meter - due to rarity and age the supply of these connectors is growing exceedingly thin with most laying around in dusty store rooms and warehouses somewhere with no one knowing what they are) I located my small supply by accident in an old school electronics shop who could not think of a single use for them, they and were glad to unload them!
While my limited supply of mic connectors lasts, in my opinion this probe set is the best probe option available. BNCs make a fine connector, but many have damaged the brittle case trying to install them and the extra leverage of the long BNC connector increases the chance of damage in use as well.
The calrad/amphenol style "vintage mic connector" is the 2nd from the right in the supplied comparison photo
(Left to Right - BNC, Switchcraft 2501F, Vintage Microphone Connector, Switchcraft 5501F)
The unit is presented in a Labeled, Retail Quality, Reusable, 4 Mil Poly Ziplock Bag and is wrapped with a Reusable Velcro Strip to keep the leads organized and ready.
This is hand assembled by me from my popular Deluxe VTVM probe kit sold here on eBay, using my methods and good attention to detail which is composed of the following items (many of which are hard to source economically):
1 Pair of Test Lead Probes - 1 Red/1 Black
2 Vintage Microphone Connectors (also known as Amphenol "Mini" Mic Connector)
1 Meg Ohms of Resistance
1 Alligator Clip & Heat Shrink Tubing
2 Laminated Self Adhesive Probe Labels and Clear Heat Shrink Tubing to cover the probe labels, resulting in a professional and durable setup (see photos)
2 36" length of RG174 Coaxial Wire for DC Lead (Very Flexible - makes a great test lead)
1 36" Length of 18 Gauge Black Rubber Test Lead Wire (PowerWerx brand Very Flexible - High Quality) for the Ground Lead
The original instructions specify shielded cable for the DC lead, the original supplied wire was a coaxial microphone style wire, many people use either standard (unshielded) test probe wire for the leads or a shielded coaxial cable, I Supply a 36" piece of black RG174 for the DC lead and for the AC/Ohms lead and a 36" piece of black test probe wire for the ground
I have shipped these probes and kits to several dozen countries and have received nothing but praise for bot the kits and probes, I think you too will be pleased with this simple and durable set to get that old meter back in service!
